I know this situation because I have been an expat for 8 years.
My expatriation in Spain was not a complete success at the beginning: I went there with a low intermediate level and my life was mostly in French and English. My friends and colleagues could speak English, and my partner was Spanish (and we always spoke English to each other) so on top on not practising, it was quite easy for me to ask for help and rely on someone else to do the work “for me”.
Because of the lack of opportunity to listen to and speak Spanish, I realised that I wasn’t improving like I thought I would. After almost two years, I took action: I started to take Spanish classes and actively learn new vocabulary. And this is when I started to see a change: I could understand more, I was feeling more confident knowing what was going on and what was asked from me, and I also knew what to say or answer! I was able to go anywhere without feeling too nervous, fearing a native would talk to me.
➡️ I know what difficulties and challenges expats can face and what vocabulary and sentences are important at the start. I have designed the course with this aim: give expats the essential words and sentences they need to quickly be more independent and understand a lot of daily conversations.
I also know that commiting to classes is not always possible, for personnal and/or professional reasons. What is the course about?
This course is designed for expats to learn specific vocabulary which is useful for various daily situations in France. You will learn vocabulary and sentences to use at the restaurant, at the bakery, or at the doctor's among others. On top of getting the vocabulary sheets, you will be able to practise and apply your knowledge through vocabulary and listening exercises to make sure you memorise it. All the exercises have a direct feedback so that you know if you got it right or not.
Who is it for?
The course has been designed for expats who have a beginner (already with some knowledge) or intermediate level. If you have no French at all or already have an advanced level, this course might be too difficult or not challenging enough. My name is Laurie, I am French, a certified French teacher and the founder of Frenchie Classes.
I have been a language student and an expat for most of my adult life: I was an expat in England during 5 years and I have been an expat in Spain for almost 4 years. I have been through the whole process of learning English and understanding the culture, and I am doing it all over again with Spanish! So I know and understand the challenges expats can face when learning a new language and living in a foreign country.
After a few years working in public and private schools, I decided to create Frenchie Classes, my online school for expats in France. My aim is to help expats to learn the real French spoken by natives, have the tools to quickly deal with daily situations, and feel more confident, as well as help them understand the culture and how the French system works.
